What does each test ask?

Each test looks at a different kind of thinking. The handbook says the four measure problem-solving, reasoning, creative thinking in writing, comprehension, interpretation and applying known concepts to new situations1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

Reading Comprehension

Your child reads a set of texts and answers questions about them. Texts may include fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama, with diagrams, tables, charts or maps1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. Everything needed to answer is printed on the paper, so no special subject knowledge is needed1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

Communicating Ideas in Writing

Your child writes a response to an image, a piece of text, or both1WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, in any style or text type. The test measures how well a child can come up with interesting ideas from a prompt and turn them into a piece of writing1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. Spelling, grammar and punctuation have little impact, as long as the work is readable1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

Read the full guide to the ASET writing test.

Quantitative Reasoning

This test checks how well a child uses mathematical and scientific reasoning to solve problems1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. The content is very different to what is taught in school1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published, so school maths alone is not the point.

Read the Quantitative Reasoning guide.

Abstract Reasoning

Questions use shapes and patterns, not words or numbers. There are 21WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published question types: what comes next in a sequence, and what fits the gap in a pattern. Children need to work even more quickly than the other tests1WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

3

How is the ASET marked?

Scanners read the multiple-choice answers, and each correct answer scores one point. There are no marks taken off for wrong answers1WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, so a guess is always better than a blank.

The writing is hand-marked by at least 21WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published trained markers. Their score rests on relevance to the prompt, originality and how well the ideas are communicated1WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

The performance report shows a standardised score for each of the 4 tests and a Total Standard Score3WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. Academic places go on the Total Standard Score only3WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, and all 4 tests are worth the same3WA Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

4

What rules apply in the test room?

One booklet for everything

Your child uses one answer booklet for all four tests, and only that booklet is scored1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

Stop on time

Children stop the moment time is called, with no going back to an earlier test1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

Rough working

Rough working is fine in the question booklet, but markers never see it1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

No help with words

Supervisors can't explain a question or say what a word means1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. Reading the question is part of the test.

Keeping track of time

A spoken warning comes 51WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published minutes before each test ends. Children may wear a silent watch or exam timer that isn't a smart device1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

Answers out of line

If answers slip out of line with the question numbers, your child should not rub anything out, and tell a supervisor straight away1WA Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

One answer booklet for all four tests: shade one oval, A to D; lined writing pages; a planning space markers don't see.
