Queensland Academy entrance test: how entry works at each campus

It depends on your child's school year now. QASMT Year 7 is applied for in Year 5^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}, and Year 10 applications open from Term 3 of Year 8^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}.

Children who miss Year 7 can still apply for Year 10. Mid-course entry is a non-standard route for Years 7 to 9, with additional criteria and limitations^{1Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

For Year 10 in 2028, QAHS applications close 26 February 2027^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published} and its test is on 13 March 2027^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}. The test is run by Edutest^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published} and takes about 3^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published} hours. It has two ability tests, which measure reasoning, and three achievement tests, which measure what your child has learned.

The reasoning, reading and maths tests are multiple choice^{8Edutest · 12 October 2026 · Published}. The writing test has no separate planning or reading time^{8Edutest · 13 October 2026 · Published}, and Edutest may set creative, descriptive, narrative, persuasive, expository or informative^{8Edutest · 12 October 2026 · Published} writing.

What does my child take on test day?

Your child must bring 2 black or blue pens, 2 pencils, an eraser, a sharpener and ID^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. The test may be on school days or weekends, in morning or afternoon sessions^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}, and the Academies take no requests for a preferred session, a session change or a venue^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

Each Academy reads the whole application, not the test alone. Entrance test results are read alongside the rest of the application ^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}, and the Principal's decision is final, with no individual feedback for unsuccessful applicants^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

For QASMT Year 7, selection uses the Entrance Test, school reports and NAPLAN, an engagement activity and other information^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}. Year 10 entry has 4^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published} steps.

1. Apply online through the Queensland Academies portal

   Choose one Academy first. The rule is one application, one Academy^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}.

2. Register for the entrance test

   The invitation arrives within 5 school days of applying^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. Register within 3 days of the invitation, or by the registration close if that is sooner^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

3. Sit the Edutest test

   At the campus you applied to, on its published date. ^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}

4. Interview, if shortlisted

   Bring a sample of academic work^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published} and a statement of academic journey, one A4 page at most^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

5. A notice of outcome

   It tells you the result of the application. ^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}

Is there an interview for QASMT Year 7?

Shortlisted Year 7 applicants take part in an engagement activity. Each one also receives a letter of recommendation form for the primary school principal^{1Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. Until recently this step was an interview with Academy staff, in 2025 and earlier^{1Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

What is the merit pool?

Capable applicants who aren't offered a place may be considered in a merit pool to the end of Year 7^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}. A place in the pool is not an offer, and no one can say whether a vacancy will come up.

Will we see our child's score?

No. Families get no individual results or parent reports^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}, and Edutest gives no access to raw scores, answer sheets or written responses^{9Edutest · 12 October 2026 · Published}. Unsuccessful applicants also get no individual feedback. ^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}

You apply online, once a year, to one Academy. Gather these first: a recent photo of your child^{1Qld Academies · 14 October 2026 · Published}, plus birth certificate and any visa details, the 2 most recent semester school reports and NAPLAN results^{1Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

• ✓

  Choose your Academy before you start. There is one application in a given year^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}.

The official step is the Queensland Academies enrolments site, which holds the application portal.

Can a QASMT student move to QACI or QAHS for Year 10?

Not automatically. There is no transfer from QASMT Year 9 to QACI or QAHS^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}, so a QASMT student who wants another campus makes a new Year 10 application. Choose the campus that suits your child's interests before you apply.

Yes. A remote test is possible if you live and study a long way from the school; contact Edutest at least 3 weeks before the test^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}, and it costs an extra fee, set by Edutest^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

Both choose students by test. The Academies also read school reports and NAPLAN, and interview shortlisted children; NSW Selective places go on test performance and the order of your school choices^{11NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published}.

Families in NSW: read about the NSW Selective test.

Knowing the format helps most, so test day holds no surprises. Edutest sells practice tests with 20 items per test, valid for 90 days^{9Edutest · 12 October 2026 · Published}, covering verbal, numerical, reading and maths; no writing^{16Edutest · 12 October 2026 · Published}. In Edutest's words, they have fewer questions, untimed, not necessarily as hard^{16Edutest · 12 October 2026 · Published}.

• ✓

  Practise shading answers on a separate sheet, not circling them in the booklet.

• ✓

  Write to a short prompt in 15^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published} minutes, starting straight away: there is no separate planning or reading time^{8Edutest · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

• ✓

  Keep reading widely and doing school maths; the achievement tests measure what your child has learned. ^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}

• ✓

  Ask your child's school about NAPLAN and reports, which the Academies also read. ^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}

See the official practice and samples. Keep the week before calm and ordinary, with sleep and a normal routine. Your child is more than one test.

Can we apply to more than one Academy?

No. A child can make one application in a given year^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}, and it names one Academy, chosen before you apply. ^{2Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}

Does a brother or sister at the Academy help?

No. There is no automatic sibling entry^{1Qld Academies · 12 October 2026 · Published}. Siblings go through the same selective process as everyone else.

What if my child is sick on test day?

A child who is sick must not attend the test^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. Email the Academies, then send a medical certificate within 3 school days^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. A deferred test is offered with a valid medical certificate, if a later test is available^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

Can the test move for a family holiday?

No. Deferrals are not for routine school activities, local events, family holidays in term time or personal travel^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. If your child misses the test, you need an email within 3 school days, or the application is cancelled^{4Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}.

Are there scholarships?

There is no application process for scholarships^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}. The Academies list an application fee and program fees instead. ^{2Qld Academies · 13 October 2026 · Published}
