Questions draw on concepts from the NSW curriculum up to Year 61NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, and the Department says there's no new or special knowledge needed1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. There is no syllabus to learn: the format is what's worth knowing.

Why does Reading have more answers than questions?

Some Reading questions have several parts, so 171NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published questions need 381NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published answers. Count answers, not questions, when you plan practice time.

Where is the test held?

At a local test centre chosen from your child's primary school: most are local public high schools3NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. The test is held only in NSW3NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, so children living interstate or overseas come back to sit it.

What if my child is sick on test day?

Keep your child home. The Department's advice is to keep a sick child home and request illness or misadventure3NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. A sick child brought to the test may not be allowed to sit the test3NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published.

The request goes in your application dashboard within 53NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published business days. If the request is accepted, it may lead to the make-up test, or an adjusted score if your child sat part of the test3NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. Last cycle's make-up test was on 22 May 20262NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

Can my child have adjustments for disability or a medical condition?

Yes. Parents can request reasonable adjustments for disability or medical conditions2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. Examples include specific seating, noise-reducing earphones, medical equipment such as a glucose monitor, and wheelchair access4NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. The Department's online practice tests are a good place to try any assistive technology first.

How does the computer test work?

Your child reads every question and enters every answer on a computer. The test runs on computers provided by the Department3NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, and work is saved automatically every 30 seconds3NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

See what changed when the test moved to computers.

No calculator or dictionary1NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. Each child gets 23NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published sheets of working paper and can ask for more. In Writing, children can plan on paper or on screen, then type1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

How is the computer test different from paper practice?

The Department's PDF practice tests are older paper-based versions1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, so their layout no longer matches the test. Its online practice tests do: online practice simulates the real test1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

Try one online practice test before the day, so the screen, the timer and the tools feel familiar. Use paper practice for extra questions, not for the feel of the test.

4

How is the Selective test marked?

Multiple-choice answers are computer-marked, with manual reliability checks5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. Each Writing response is marked by 25NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published examiners.

Writing is marked on ideas, purpose and audience, language for effect1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, and marks also count structure, grammar, punctuation, style and vocabulary1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. The Department's practice papers tell children there are no marks lost for incorrect answers6NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. A few questions are shared across test versions, and common items do not count3NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

Results come back as a band for each section, not a score: Top 10% · next 15% · next 25% · lowest 50%5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. Bands are not percent correct5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, and no scores or ranks are given5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

What does the result show?

A band for each section, showing where your child sits among only the children who sat that year's test, not every child in Year 67NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published. The Department says the test is not a measure of school learning5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, so a band says nothing about how your child is doing at school.

Is there a pass mark or a cut-off?

No. There is no pass or fail mark5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, and no set minimum entry score5NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published. Places are offered on test performance and the order of your school choices8NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published.

No practice score, including ours, can predict a band or a place. It can show which questions to review.

5

  2. Try the real screen once
