What decides whether to accept or decline a Selective offer?

Three rules decide it for almost every family. Once you know them, keeping the offer while you wait is usually the safe move.

What would change the answer for your family?

Any one of these can outweigh the default. If one is true for you, let it lead.

Tips towards keeping it

Your child would rather the school with the offer

Keep it. If a higher offer comes, you can decline that one instead. 2NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published

Changes the decision date

Changes the cost and timing

A private school place is also on the table

Compare six years of costs. Ask the private school how long it will hold a place. A selective decline is final. 2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published

How does the choice work out for different families?

These are worked examples, not real families. None of them can say whether a reserve offer will come.

Second-choice offer, keen on the first

Your child has an offer from their second choice and is on the reserve list for the first. They'd love the first choice but like the second too.

Accept the offer now and wait. If the first choice offers a place before 3 December 2026, 3 pm (Sydney time)1NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published, accept it and the second-choice place is declined for you. 2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published

On the date itself you'll choose again. Reserve movement is not published2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Not published, so nobody can say how far the list will move.

Happy where the offer is

Your child holds an accepted offer and has made friends who are going there. Then the higher choice offers a place.

You can decline the new offer and keep the original place. 2NSW Education · 13 October 2026 · Published Answer it by its due date either way. 2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published

It assumes your child truly prefers the offered school. Ask them again before you answer.

Selective offer and a private deposit

Your child holds a selective offer. A private school wants a deposit soon, and your child likes both.

Keep the selective offer while you compare. Price six years at the private school, then decide. A selective decline is final. 2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published

Private deposit terms are each school's own. Ask for them in writing.

Reserve list only, no offer

Your child has no offer but is on a reserve list for one school.

Nothing to decide yet. Offers can come until the end of Term 1 20273NSW Education · 18 October 2026 · Published, by email. 2NSW Education · 12 October 2026 · Published After that, places are filled through the Years 8 to 11 process3NSW Education · 18 October 2026 · Published.
